About Vohandas

Vohandas was born in 2020—a time when the world slowed down, and many of us were forced to reflect on what truly mattered. Like so many others, I had spent years chasing corporate success, molding myself into the expectations of professionalism while slowly losing touch with the creativity that once fueled me.

I needed something different. Something that felt real. Something that allowed me to create with intention.

That desire led me back home—to Nairobi, Kenya.

Rooted in Nairobi, Designed with Purpose

Nairobi is more than just where I’m from—it’s the heartbeat of Vohandas. It’s a city of creators, entrepreneurs, and artisans. A place where tradition and innovation blend seamlessly. But it’s also a city that has felt the weight of the global fashion industry in ways many don’t realize.

For decades, fast fashion waste from the Global North has poured into East Africa. Bales of discarded clothing, much of it unsellable, arrive in Nairobi’s markets every day, creating an environmental crisis that clogs our waterways and suffocates local businesses. Many neighborhoods that were once thriving hubs of textile craftsmanship have been overshadowed by piles of mass-produced, throwaway fashion.

Vohandas was built to challenge that cycle. We don’t chase trends. We don’t mass-produce. We don’t contribute to waste.

Instead, we create in small batches, ensuring that every piece is intentional, timeless, and crafted with care. By producing only what is needed, we eliminate overproduction—the same problem that has turned East Africa into a dumping ground for the world’s excess.

At Vohandas, every piece tells a story—not just of beauty, but of sustainability and purpose. We carefully select materials, prioritize ethical production, and create accessories meant to be cherished, not discarded.

We believe that style should never come at the expense of people or the planet. Fashion should honor the hands that make it, the culture it comes from, and the world it exists in.

From Nairobi to the World

In 2021, just a year after launching, we opened our first store in Nairobi. Today, our products can be found in select boutiques in Kenya and the United States, with two fulfillment warehouses—one in Nairobi, where our pieces are created, and another in New York City, where select items are packaged and shipped to our U.S. customers.

But no matter how far we grow, Vohandas will always be rooted in Nairobi. This city, with its rich culture, resilience, and creativity, is woven into everything we do.

This is more than fashion. This is a movement—one that values craftsmanship over excess, sustainability over shortcuts, and meaning over mass production.
